THE MEMORY OF THINGS

THE MEMORY OF THINGS

A day like any other. I walked through the city in a normal day, without noticing a single change in my surroundings. Around me, a world of surfaces. A wall is a wall, the ground is the ground, a piece of wood is a piece of wood and a stain, dirt. They were unchangeable words and ideas. Even the earth and the sky seemed flat, with no epic surprises, too well known for too long. My eyes passed over them, slipping, my steps and mind over them, my imagination over them. At that point I felt that all existence’s intrigues were somewhere else. Art, very far away.

And without realizing it, every time the cat jumps to his window he leaves the traces of his paws on the wall; the shoes of countless anonymous pedestrians imprint a perfect lined figure; bottle cap constellations on the next corner’s pavement; dream-like figures come out of motor oil stains; over there, shattered mirrors on an old wall; someone dripped a red liquid on construction wood, thus drawing all the mind’s forms; the posters and propaganda spot is corroded, it opens inwards, revealing the layers of endless use; the wear of materials trace the asphalt making it look like the bark of a tree or they appear like inaccurate holes spreading like moles on the skin; traces like riddles; light is poured, transforming cement into a magic place; even the night sky seems to be stepped by distracted soles.

¨Making the invisible visible.¨ There are ephemeral situations everywhere, mistakes soon to be erased, and once I’ve retraced my steps I’ll be able to see them. Something changed in me this morning, maybe the looking lens of a camera. To conceive photography as images where there is always something being represented is to remain on the surface. But if one looks beyond, the gaze will encounter situations which have always been there, hidden behind the visual contact we almost never make. When transferring the exterior relation with the world there are transitional spaces which by themselves are of no value. This seems to be especially important in ¨The memory of things¨, because it focuses on the totality. I see how the images drift from any premeditated intention. The attentive looking eye is the sole witness of time playing with the materials, causing deterioration. And in these subtle metamorphoses there is a certain degree of unnamable truth. A water stain provides answers to complicated questions. But what is most important is that it arises a questioning on our relationship with ideas through vision.

I open my eyes for a moment, just enough to reach dark mysteries and holding my breath, I look backwards. My footsteps have left their trace, my footprints on the ground.
